Adult Bible Study at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church
God has given His Word to be heard, read, studied, confessed, and treasured throughout the Christian life. At St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shaker Heights, adults gather after Sunday worship for Bible study that is friendly, thoughtful, engaging, and firmly rooted in Holy Scripture. Our Adult Bible Study begins at 11:15 a.m. and provides an opportunity to grow together in our understanding of God’s Word and the Christian faith.
Bible study is more than the exchange of interesting religious ideas. Scripture is God’s Word, through which He teaches us about our sin, His saving work in Jesus Christ, and the life of faith that flows from His grace. The Formula of Concord therefore calls the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments the sole rule and standard by which Christian doctrine and teachers are to be judged.
Growing in the Word of Christ
Christian growth does not mean moving beyond the basic truths of the faith. Rather, we return continually to Christ and learn ever more deeply the riches of what God has revealed. Luther himself emphasized the lifelong necessity of studying the Catechism, recognizing that the Commandments, Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, and Lord’s Supper continually lead Christians back into the breadth and depth of Holy Scripture.
For this reason, our studies may explore individual books of the Bible, Christian doctrine, the Lutheran Confessions, Church history, or questions facing Christians today. The subject may change, but the foundation does not. Scripture remains the norm, while the Lutheran Confessions help us articulate faithfully what Scripture teaches concerning Christ, justification, Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, vocation, the Church, and the Christian life.
Faithful Discussion in Christian Fellowship
Our discussions can be lively and challenging because thoughtful Christians often bring different experiences and questions to the table. Such conversation is valuable when it sends us back to the Word of God. Rather than allowing current events, personal opinions, or cultural assumptions to become our final authority, we learn together to ask what Scripture says and how Christ calls us to understand our lives in light of His Word.
The Formula of Concord makes this distinction particularly important by insisting that even respected Christian writings remain subordinate to Scripture. That approach produces both humility and confidence: humility because our own reasoning is not the measure of truth, and confidence because God has not left His Church without His clear Word.

Adult Bible Study follows the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Worship Service and begins at 11:15 a.m. Visitors are welcome, and no advanced theological background is necessary. Bring your questions, bring your Bible, and come ready to listen, learn, and participate.
