For You Radio: The Gospel of Jesus Christ for You
What is the Gospel? The answer is not ultimately found by looking deeper into ourselves, measuring the strength of our faith, or asking whether we have been sincere enough. The Gospel directs us outside ourselves to Jesus Christ—to His incarnation, cross, resurrection, and objective work for sinners. For You Radio exists to proclaim that astonishing mercy of Christ clearly, faithfully, and personally: Christ has acted for sinners, and His promises are for you.
Each week, Pastor Troy Neujahr and Pastor Craig Donofrio discuss the Christian faith with the conviction that the Gospel is not good advice about how we might reach God. It is good news about what God has already done in Jesus Christ. St. Paul writes that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” and that we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son (Romans 5:8–10). The direction of salvation is therefore always from God to us.
A Faith That Clings to Christ
Christian faith does not save because faith itself is a great human achievement. Faith receives Christ and the promises He has won for us. The Augsburg Confession teaches that people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ’s sake through faith because their sins are forgiven on account of Christ and His saving death (Augsburg Confession IV).
This distinction matters deeply. When faith is turned inward, Christians can easily begin asking whether they believe strongly enough, repent sincerely enough, or live faithfully enough to earn God’s favor. The Gospel instead points to the finished work of Christ. Our certainty rests in Him—in His blood shed for sinners, His resurrection from the dead, and His promises spoken through His Word.
The Gospel Is Something to Be Proclaimed
God has chosen to bring this saving message to people through His Word. The Formula of Concord teaches that the Holy Spirit uses the preaching and hearing of God’s Word, citing the apostolic promise that the Gospel is the power of God for salvation and that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Christianity is therefore not a search for a hidden spiritual experience. God speaks, Christ promises, and faith receives.
The Apology of the Augsburg Confession summarizes Gospel preaching as the proclamation that confronts sin while offering, for Christ’s sake, forgiveness, righteousness, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life. That is why the words “for you” matter so much. The Gospel is not merely the statement that Christ died in the abstract. Christ died for sinners, and the forgiveness He won is delivered personally through His promises.
